Diesel Engine Filtration Systems Bucket

Diesel filtration systems play a critical role in ensuring that diesel engines are functioning correctly. Many engine components will get corroded or damaged if there is poor filtration of fuel particulates. Diesel is a highly viscous material that can easily carry foreign substances to the engine and damage the injection pump. Therefore, it is vital that the fuel passes through appropriate filters.

The Filtration Process

The filtration process usually has two critical stages;

  • Primary Stage – The primary filter uses a coarse material to remove larger debris in the fuel while smaller debris passes through. The filtered particulates are then removed through a drain plug. Once there is significant particle build-up, the pressure gauge will indicate that the dirty filter needs to be changed.
  • Secondary Stage – The secondary filter is made of finer materials to catch smaller particulates that may have passed through the primary filter. This filter is located between the injection pump and the fuel supply pump.

Types of Filtration Systems

  • Oil Filter
Oil lubricates the different components of the engine and therefore must be free of any abrasive materials that may cause damage to other engine parts. There are two types of oil filters: twist-off filters which must be replaced regularly and filter cartridges which can be refreshed by replacing the cartridge.
  • Air Filter
Generally, an automobile takes in 200-500m3 of air depending on its size. This air may be contaminated with a wide variety of impurities depending on the environment, including dirt and sand, pollen, and more. Poor air filtration can cause engine damage over long periods of time. It is recommended that the air filters should be replaced at least once a year to maintain optimal engine performance and acceptable exhaust emissions.
  • Fuel Filter
The fuel filter protects the injection system from damage caused by particulates present in the fuel. The diesel fuel filter also condenses water that is in the tank normally due to temperature fluctuations. Moreover, it prevents oxidation within the engine by keeping it free from reactive dirt. The diesel filter ensures that there is regulated fuel heating, priming, and standard water levels within the engine.

Benefits of a Diesel Engine Filtration System

Diesel fuel tanks are subject to condensation caused by temperature changes. Additional moisture can enter the engine if air enters through defective filters. At night or during cold weather, this air condenses and settles on the tank walls.

Water causes important engine components to rust, making them less efficient. It also reduces the lubricating properties of fuel and oil which significantly reduces the usable service life of engine components. Moreover, moisture often creates an ideal environment for the production of bacteria.

This is why a quality filtration system is critical for any diesel engine system. The advantages of quality diesel filtration systems include:

  • Lower maintenance expenses
  • Reduced equipment downtime
  • Optimization of engine performance
  • More efficient fuel usage
