At Central Diesel Inc. (CDI), we distribute diesel engines and diesel engine components to customers across a wide range of industries. One of the main markets we serve is the agricultural industry.

The Role of Diesel Engines in the Agricultural Industry

In the agricultural industry, many pieces of heavy-duty equipment utilize diesel engines. Diesel engine-powered equipment is used within nearly every aspect of the agricultural sector, from crop planting to watering to fertilizing to harvesting to processing. In fact, diesel engines power more than 66% of all farm equipment, move 90% of agricultural products each year, and pump 20% of all farm water in the United States.

Types of Agricultural Diesel Engine Fuel

Diesel-powered agricultural equipment generally runs on one of two types of fuel: ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and dyed ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSDD).

Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)

Ultra-low sulfur diesel—also called on-road diesel—is a fuel product that is clear. As demanded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and New York State Senate (NYS) standards, it only contains 15 ppm of sulfur. It is typically used for on-road agricultural equipment, such as personal vehicles and farm trucks.

Dyed Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSDD)

Dyed ultra-low sulfur diesel—also called off-road diesel—is a colored fuel. It also complies with USEPA and NYS standards regarding sulfur content. However, it is generally used for off-road agricultural equipment, such as gators and skid loaders, generators, and tractors.

Advantages of Using Diesel Engines for Agricultural Operations

Diesel engines are used to power the majority of agricultural equipment in the United States and other countries across the world. They are employed in the planting, tending, harvesting, processing, and distribution of crops. Some of the reasons why they are used over alternative power sources include:

  • They offer the ideal combination of energy efficiency, power and performance, and durability and reliability needed for agricultural operations at the best price point.
  • They provide high power outputs at low speeds, allow for greater control over equipment operation.
  • They produce less waste heat, which translates to better thermal efficiency.
  • They support heavier loads and run for longer periods without experiencing damage to moving components, which makes them well-suited for the heavy-duty applications common within the agricultural industry.
